Thugs try to vandalise tank

Criminals leave no stone unturned to get hold of metal objects in our area.

One of their plans failed on Sunday night, however.
Observant residents noticed a fire at the military tank in the municipal park on Iridium Street in Carletonville at approximately 20:00 on Sunday. They notified authorities, and the fire department went to quench the fire.
On Monday, it was evident that someone had started a fire under the tank as the remains of the fire were still there, and the bottom of the tank was blackened. It also looked like someone had previously burnt something in the tank’s cabin.
Despite these attempts, presumably, to remove metal objects, the tank was still solid. Although the rubber of the track around its wheels was cracked, it was still in place. When the Herald checked the tank on Monday, a homeless man was sitting behind bushes nearby. He said he did not know who had set the tank alight. It was unlikely that the homeless people were responsible, as they had made their fires behind the bushes.
Many residents shared their knowledge of the tank after the incident. They say it used to be a gathering place for military veterans who were members of M.O.T.H. (Memorial Order of the Tin Hats) until about 16 years ago.
The Herald took the issue to the Merafong City Local Municipality on Tuesday.
“The old military tank belongs to the municipality and has been in the park for over 40 years. It is currently closed to prevent access. “We will make a submission requesting the local government to donate the tank to the military base,” said the municipal spokesperson, Mrs Nomonde Mahube.
