Station Road increasingly dangerous

The dilapidated "Station Road" outside Fochville is becoming an increasing safety hazard daily.

This road, connecting the R500 with the R54, is in dreadful condition.
One of the worst clusters of potholes is near the entrance to BME.
However, there are many more deep potholes in other areas too.
Some of these are situated at blind turns, so drivers cannot see whether or not it is safe to swerve onto the other lane.
Although many residents in the Fochville area use this road as a faster and safer way to Potchefstroom, it also serves as an alternative route to the N12 if this main road is closed.
On 6 June, for instance, the N12 was closed for several hours after the accident in which three Fochville police officers died, resulting in higher-than-usual traffic on Station Road. Residents say there were many near accidents as there was no space for motorists to swerve into with the heavier traffic.
“If they cannot repair the road, an alternative would be to scrape gravel paths on the side of the road in the areas with the most potholes,” one resident noted.
“The current disrepair poses a grave threat, especially at night, with reduced visibility increasing the likelihood of accidents and injuries.
“The DA will submit written questions to the Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale,” Merafong DA’s political head, Ms Ina Cilliers, complains.
The Herald asked the regional manager of the Department of Roads and Transport in the Krugersdorp area, Ms Bulwelwa Thomas, about the problems again. Earlier this year, she admitted the road was so poor that it could no longer be maintained but would have to be rehabilitated.
