Abandoned hospital a crime zone

The West Wits Hospital that the government “renovated” for more than R700 million and then abandoned is becoming a huge crime generator.

The Carletonville police say they had their hands full after an incident at the hospital at approximately 22:00 on 30 June.
Protea Security members were patrolling in the area when a group of between 100 to 150 zama-zamas at- tacked them. The zamas were likely looting when they noticed the security.
A shootout ensued between the security personnel and the illegal miners. During the clash, a security guard was shot in the foot, and a zama-zama was fatally wounded. Although the deceased had not yet been identified when the newspaper went to print, he is believed to be a Lesotho national
The police are investigating a case of attempted murder and conducting a judicial inquiry into the death.
