Zamas shoot security guards

Two security guards are in hospital after being shot by illegal miners last week.

The Carletonville police say the incident occurred on Sunday, 19 June.
Security personnel from Quattro were patrolling in the area of DRDGold’s gold plant at approximately 02:00. They suddenly saw a group of unknown African men, presumably zama-zamas. When the illegal miners fired shots in their direction, the guards retaliated and then went back to the guard room.
Upon their arrival, they found that two of their colleagues had been shot. The attackers had also stolen their shotgun.
The guards were immediately taken to Fountain Private Hospital and transferred to the ICU at Lenmed Hospital. The police are investigating two cases of attempted murder and one of armed robbery.
