Agnew Road potholes hazardous

Deep potholes in Agnew Road in Carletonville endanger the lives of residents and visitors to the town.

“This pothole is almost as wide as my car. It is unacceptable,” complained a resident, Mr Danie Joubert, this week.
He was referring to a large pothole in Agnew Road near the intersection with Kaolin Street. It is next to the complex that used to be Goldfields Recreation Club.
Joubert says he reported the pothole to the municipality and a councillor on Monday, 6 June. The hole is big and deep enough to damage almost any vehicle, However, it had still not been repaired a week later.
Meanwhile, numerous other bad potholes are scattered across the same street. One particularly large pothole is developing at the four-way stop with Kaolin Street.
As Agnew Road is one of the main entrances into Carletonville, the potholes pose a danger to visitors too.
On Tuesday, the Herald asked the Merafong City Local Municipality how it planned to address the issue.
“The civil engineering section has started procuring material and is waiting for the procurement processes to unfold. Therefore, we expect the supply and delivery of material to be done as soon as the procurement process is complete,” the municipal spokesperson answered.
The Herald also asked what motorists should do if they want to claim compensation from the municipality’s insurers should their vehicles be damaged by these or other potholes in our towns.
“Firstly, it has to be within the municipal jurisdiction of Merafong. Motorists should then have the location where the incident occurred and take a picture of the pothole and the damages. They can then submit the required information to the municipal finance offices (budget and treasury),” the spokesperson said.
