Four workers at Harmony Gold’s Kusasalethu mine died in an accident at the mine over the weekend.
According to the company’s spokesperson, Sihle Maake, the workers lost their lives following an infrastructure maintenance-related incident on Saturday, 7 May.
“Their families and relevant authorities were immediately informed and the affected area has been closed, pending an in-loco investigation,” says Maake.
“We are deeply saddened by this incident. At Harmony, we view our employees as part of the larger family. Our priority is now to support the families of the deceased and everyone affected by this tragedy”, said Peter Steenkamp, chief executive officer of Harmony.
