Eight arrested after mob justice

A group of Kokosi residents was arrested after severely assaulting a suspected cable thief. The man later died from his wounds.

According to Fochville police’s communication officer, Sgt Elsie Tshonte, the incident happened at approximately 16:00 on 3 March. The group assaulted the 32- year-old victim in Kokosi Ext. 6. Several residents with whom the Herald spoke say the mob beat and burnt him after accusing him of stealing cables.The police were called to the scene, but, upon their arrival, they found that the man had already been taken to hospital. A case of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm was opened. The charge was changed to murder after the victim died in hospital from his injuries. The police soon arrested eight residents, five men and three women, for the murder. The suspects, aged 27 to 37 years, appeared in the Fochville Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 10 March. They returned to the court for their bail applications yesterday, Wednesday, 16 March. At the time of the newspaper going to print, the outcome was still unknown.
