Merafong’s matrics excel

Despite the severe disruptions brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, Merafong’s matrics of 2021 performed splendidly.

Although none of the schools in our area obtained a 100 per cent pass rate, several performed better than last year and none scored below 50 per cent. Carleton Jones High School regained its position as the school with the highest pass rate in Merafong when its 157 matrics obtained a 98.1 per cent pass rate, up by 4.92 per cent from last year’s 93.49 per cent.Hoërskool Fochville is in the second position with a pass rate of 94.8 per cent. Its 116 matrics achieved the most distinctions, however. One learner, Melindie Schalekamp, got seven distinctions while four others, Johann Theron, Fijanco Schroeder, Aneske Olivier and Johann Theron each obtained five distinctions. Meanwhile, Hoërskool Carletonville’s 173 learners obtained a pass rate of 93.6 per cent. Two learners, Werner Oosthuizen and Uwais Lambat, achieved six distinctions each. Werner obtained distinctions in Afrikaans Huistaal, English First Additional Language, Life Orientation, Accounting, Engineering Graphics and Design and Physical Science. Uwais got distinctions in Mathematics, Life Orientation, Accounting, CAT, Life Science and Physical Science. Hoërskool Wonderfontein, one of only two technical schools in the area, obtained a pass rate of 81, 6 per cent. “Our school had excellent results in technical subjects with only one learner in this field who did not pass. Most of our results in technical subjects were over 50 per cent. We had the highest Technical Mathematics results in Gauteng West, which was 18 per cent higher than last year,” says the principal, Mr Danie Beeslaar. Although Letsatsing Combined School’s 213 matrics obtained a 78.9 per cent pass rate, 15.16 per cent lower than last year, they are still the top-performing township school. One learner, Phelisa Nongcula, obtained five distinctions. Remarkably, Letsatsing’s learners also obtained a Bachelor’s pass rate of 61,3 per cent. “That makes us number one in Merafong in this regard, which is important,” says the school’s curriculum manager, Mr Simon Tshale. Fochville Secondary School’s 68 matrics moved into first place in Kokosi when its learners obtained a sound 77.9 per cent success rate. Imfundo Secondary School, which had 200 matrics last year, also had a good pass rate of 75.5 per cent while the 183 matrics of Thuto Kitso Comprehensive School had a pass rate of 73.8 per cent. Tswasongu Secondary School walked off as Khutsong’s best achievers again when its 117 matrics obtained a 75.1 per cent pass rate.
