WATCH: Second sluice gate opened at Vaal Dam at 12:00

The opening of the sluice gate follows consistent heavy rains over the last two weeks in the catchments supporting the Integrated Vaal River System and the Orange River.

Thanks to the recent heavy rains the Vaal Dam has reached its maximum capacity, prompting the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) to open sluice gates on Tuesday.

The first sluice gate was opened at 10h00 and the second just after 12h00 today.

The opening of the sluice gate follows consistent heavy rains over the last two weeks in the catchments supporting the Integrated Vaal River System and the Orange River.

The department urged all farmers and communities residing downstream of the Vaal Dam to move their equipment away from the expected heavy flows, as well as ensuring that no one takes a chance to cross low-lying bridges that could be flooded.
