Illegal dumping worse by the day

The dumping of rubbish, building rubble and garden refuse in public spaces around Carletonville is getting out of control.

Several law-abiding residents complained about the problem this week. The road to the Carletonville graveyard, in particular, is a popular spot for these offenders.
By Monday, several heaps of garden refuse and building rubble lay on the left side of Haulage Street. Turning towards the grave-yard, there is even more dumping.
The long avenue of trees – once favoured for wedding and matric farewell photoshoots – has become the latest illegal dumping site. Torn black bags of garden refuse have been dumped under almost every tree and other rubbish and building rubble litter the area deeper into the veld.
Illegal dumping also came to the fore with a video of a law-abiding resident confronting offenders last weekend.

On Tuesday, the Herald asked the Merafong City Local Municipality what could or would be done about the problem.
“The municipality used to have ‘no dumping’ signs across Merafong but the community members destroyed or stole them. Merafong pleads with the community to protect the municipal infrastructure and report such matters and incidents to the South African Police Services (SAPS) and the municipality,” says the municipal spokesperson.
“Anyone found dumping illegally within Merafong will be fined,” she added.
