ANC in charge of Merafong again

The ANC is again in charge of the Merafong City Local Municipality after securing the majority of votes in Monday’s local election, but opposition parties now have more seats in council.

The ANC won in 21 wards and also secured another six PR (Proportional List) councillors because of the 49,09% of votes it received. They thus have 27 seats in council. The DA has nine seats in council after winning in five wards and securing another four PR list councillors due to the 16.36% of votes they secured. The EFF also secured 16.36% of votes. Although they only won in one ward, at Blybank, their total number of voters secured them another eight PR councillors. Both the DA and EFF thus have nine seats in council each. The Vryheidsfront Plus obtained 7.27% of votes. Although they did not win any wards, this gives them four PR seats in council. A new political party, Merafong Agents Of Change (MAOC) secured 3.64% of votes, which gives them two PR seats in council. The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), the African Independent Congress (AIC) and United Democratic Movement (UDM) each received 1.82% of votes, which gives each of them one PR seat in council. Only one independent candidate, Thabo Malatjie of Ward 4 in Khutsong, won his ward. This also gives him a seat in council.
