EFF storms municipal gate

While the street in front of the municipal building in Carletonville was closed due to an armed rob- bery on Monday morning, havoc of another kind unfolded at the back of the building.

About 30 members of the Eco- nomic Freedom Fighters forced the back gate at the employees’ parking areas open at around 11:00.
According to an EFF spokes- person, Mr Brian Makhaya, the party is furious that only 25 of the group of more than 80 temporary workers at the municipality were recently employed permanently.
They demanded that the municipality makes an internal report over the employment issues and other documentation on the issue available to them and the workers.
This report was drawn up after an internal investigation into employment issues in the municipality.
Most of the temporary workers have been working for stipends for the best part of the past decade as part of the government’s EPWP (Extended Public Works Programme) project. Issues related to the same project have caused problems, especially with municipal refuse removal.
Among other things, the EFF raised questions about the multi-purpose centre in Khutsong South that is still closed.
They also wanted the list of companies that benefited from the upgrade of the old West Wits Hospital. Although the EFF said in a letter it had only given the municipality 48 hours to respond, the municipal spokesperson denied on Tuesday that the municipality had engaged with the EFF.
“There was never any discussion over the EPWP workers issue,” their spokesperson says.
The Herald determined that the municipality had opened a case of malicious damage to property with the police, claiming that repairs to the gate amounted to R10,000.
