Driver now also charged with perjury

The Carletonville police arrested a man who had lied to them after a recent hit-and-run incident.

A resident of Carletonville who originally hails from Pakistan, Mr Oumar Ali Sahead, was killed by a vehicle in front of Miladys in Flint Street at around 21:30 on 9 September.
He was crossing the road when a silver BMW from the Halite Street direction slammed into him before immediately racing away.
According to eyewitnesses, the BMW was travelling at a high speed.
Sahead was left bleeding in the street and although bystanders called an ambulance, he passed away due to the extent of his injuries.
However, the police managed to track down the driver of the BMW, Mr Themba Motjopi soon after the accident.
Motjopi claimed his car had been hijacked in Westonaria earlier that evening.
When Carletonville detectives investigated the case, they found that Motjopi had lied about the hijacking. They arrested him at the Carletonville taxi rank on 28 September. He now has to face a charge of perjury as well as the culpable homicide charge related to Sahead’s death. He has already appeared in court.
