Parents in court again after murder

A mother and father from Carletonville Extension 9 appeared in court on Wednesday, 22 September.

They were recently arrested for the alleged murder of a burglar.
The parents were granted bail during an earlier appearance when the case was postponed.
Their arrest stemmed from an incident in Grolman Street during the early hours of 2 September.
An intruder in the family’s home was later found dead elsewhere in the street. He had allegedly been assaulted to such an extent that he had died from his injuries.
After members of the public raised many questions, the Herald tried to get clarity on the question of self-defence.
A state prosecutor at the Oberholzer Court, Mrs Elize Smith, provided some general guidelines.
“According to the legal authority, there are limits to people acting in self-defence. Self-defence is permissible, but not if someone is not in imminent danger anymore, like when the potential attacker has started running away,” she says.
