Rubbish at Coronation ignored

The Merafong City Local Municipality currently seems to be ignoring some very obvious problems in Carletonville.

Coronation Street is one of the town’s busiest streets, especially at peak time. Many drivers use it as an alternative route to get to the Carletonville Mall and Khutsong and back. One of the biggest problems related to this street is the huge amount of rubbish that is dumped in the veld near Dolomite Street. Much of the rubbish was dumped when municipal refuse workers were on strike earlier this year. Although residents of the area, including the ward councillor, Mr Carlos Rebelo, have taken photos of some of the people who dump their waste there, the problem continues and the rubbish is not picked up. Having no working street lights also makes it easier for people to dump at the site. “We have been complaining to the municipality about these problems for years. Although the new mayor promised to attend to the issues in all areas, he and his team did not turn up for an appointment he made on 8 June. It looks like he only pays attention to some wards and conveniently forgets about the residents who actually pay for services,” says Rebelo. These views were echoed by various residents on social media. They especially complain about broken street lights, as this problem makes it easier for criminals to target them. Potholes are also constantly a problem in some streets. The Herald took the concerns to the municipality on Tuesday. “The municipality is currently busy repairing the street lights. If the globes are available, they will report the street lights. There’s also a schedule for clearing rubbish across Merafong. The potholes will also be repaired soon,” a municipal spokesperson responded.
