‘Friendly’ thieves steal thousands

A couple of elderly good Samaritans from Carletonville suffered huge losses after letting a stranger into their home during the past week.

According to the Carletonville police, the couple from Pepani Street was working in the garden when a light-coloured Toyota Corolla stopped in the street in front of their home on the afternoon of 20 May. The couple in the car, who were both very friendly, asked the residents for a street address. While the man searched for the address on his cell phone, the woman in the car asked whether she could quickly use the toilet. The elderly woman let her in the house. According to the victims, the couple thanked them heartily before leaving. It was only when the home-owner and his wife went to their bedroom later that she noticed that one of her drawers were partially open and all her jewellery and other valuables, like a Kruger Rand had been stolen. Following this incident, the police warn homeowners, once again, not to allow strangers into their home.
