Shop owner arrested after hiding suspect

The police in Carletonville warn people not to try and stop them from doing their work, or they will also get into trouble.

According to Carletonville police’s communication officer, WO Peter Masooa, a police officer from the crime office recently responded to someone who had called about a wanted suspect. As the police officer went to the address, he saw the suspect running into a hardware store. The member gave chase and asked the shop owner where the suspect was.

The shop owner denied seeing the suspect, however. “The officer then called for back-up while keeping watch. The team searched for the suspect and ulti-mately found him hidden in a bin,” says Masooa. The police then arrested both the suspect and the shop owner, who was charged with defeating the ends of justice. Both suspects will appear in the Oberholzer Magistrates’ Court soon. “This is an unfortunate incident of hiding the suspect and colluding to defeat the ends of justice. We expect people to help the police with information or help to arrest the wanted person as per the Criminal Procedure Act (51 of 1977). This type of action results in a criminal record. We urge the community always to work together with the police, Masooa added.
