Carletonville SPCA lays charges after chickens’ cruel death

The Carletonville SPCA has laid charges against people involved in a government-funded project in Ventersdorp where thousands of chickens were left to starve.

According to Carletonville SPCA’s inspector Ms Elloise Rootman, the SPCA’s mother structure, the NSPCA (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), called her to the smallholding in Ventersdorp on 6 March.

The NSPCA was alerted that something was wrong at the plot. The Carletonville SPCA was contacted as they are the closest branch to Ventersdorp. Nothing could have prepared Rootman for what she found when she arrived. Over 4,000 chickens lay dead after allegedly being abandoned without food or water.

Only 19 chickens were alive among the decaying carcasses of their friends. The poor birds were dehydrated and starving. The chickens that survived the ordeal were taken to the Carletonville SPCA, where they received food, water and the necessary veterinary attention. Rootman confirmed that the Carletonville SPCA had opened a case of animal cruelty against two of the people involved in the project on Friday. Further prosecution will depend on a decision by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The NSPCA thanked the Carletonville SPCA for their assistance with this case and the hard work they put into rescuing and fighting for justice for these sentient beings.

Meanwhile, anyone who needs information on adoptions and general pet care can call the SPCA at 018 788 6262. The kennels in Beerster Street are open from 09:00 to 16:00 on weekdays and 08:00 to 11:00 on Saturdays.
