Two arrested after mob justice

Two members of the public are now behind bars after they were allegedly involved in a mob justice attack on a burglar yesterday.

According to the communication officer of the police in Carletonville, WO Peter Masooa, the police were called to the scene of a murder in Kaolin Street in Carletonville on Monday, 15 February at around 15:00.

“The complainant arrived at her home and found her house broken into. She was then called and informed that the suspect who broke into her house was arrested, assaulted and burned by the community two houses from hers,” says Masooa.

The body of a man, who was certified dead by paramedics, was found next to this house.

The police opened dockets for housebreaking and murder and also arrested two suspects for the murder.

“We are very thankful for the alertness of the community, as neighbour watch around their living areas, but when a suspect is arrested or witnesses identified the police must be informed immediately. We urge the community not to take law unto themselves. They cannot apply their own justice.

You might be angry because you lost property or loved ones, but you are not justified to unleash your anger on the suspect. Everyone is not guilty until proven guilty by the law.

The results of taking the law in your hands are very serious, you will be arrested, trialled and sentenced to jail like any other criminal.  If your intention was to assist, complete your good intention by observing the law not breaking it,” says the Carletonville station commander, Brig Marinda Theron.
