Discovery warns that Oberholzer is a Covid-19 hotspot

Discovery Health Medical Scheme warned its members in an SMS sent out yesterday afternoon (14 January).

According to the medical aid it has identified areas where people must be particularly careful of infection according to the claims data from its members who have tested positive for Covid-19. This data does not include national testing and infection data.

A hotspot district must have at least two new infections per day on average for the past seven days and at least 50 cumulative cases. The cases in the particular area must also have a doubling time of two weeks or less. Alternatively there must be at least 30 new cases per 100 000 Discovery lives over the past seven days.

Discovery warns that, according to these criteria Oberholzer is currently a Covid-19 hotspot.

Its number of cumulative cases per 100 000 Discovery lives is 5 697, which is the highest of the 24 Gauteng hotspots listed by the medical aid. Luckily the daily growth rate, measured on average over the past seven days, is only 0.84%, which the lowest of the hotspots.

The town in Gauteng with the highest daily growth rate is Cullinan with a rate of 2.24%.

Oberholzer’s seven day average of new cases per 100 000 Discovery lives is 46.1, which is also the lowest of the provincial hotspots. The town with the highest average of new cases is Wonderboom with 78.8 new cases.

Westonaria is also included on Discovery’s list of provincial hotspots.
