House robberies on the rise

The police in Carletonville say there has suddenly been an increase in house robberies in the area.

According to the communication officer of the police in Carletonville, WO Peter Masooa, one such incident took place in 3rd Street in Welverdiend on 21 August. The domestic worker was watering the garden at around 09:30 when a white bakkie stopped at the gate. Three men got out and walked up to her. They told the woman they had been sent to take measurements in the yard and she let them in. The men then overpowered her and tied her up with cable ties in the garage. The thugs then went into the house. The domestic worker managed to loosen the cable ties and free herself. She escaped from the garage and ran to the neighbours for help. When she returned with the owner, they found that only a set of mine glasses worth R60 had been stolen. Masooa says the woman was not injured but did not see the registration number. “The police are urging the community, mostly housekeepers, never to allow any strangers in the yard or house. Sometimes, the suspects claim that the owner has sent them or they are delivering items or coming to repair a TV or drain,” he says. He pleaded with house owners to educate their housekeepers not to let anyone into the house without a call from the owner beforehand. The domestic workers should also report suspicious vehicles and take down their details.
