Traffic department robbery partly an ‘inside job’

This week, the police’s trio task team arrested the security guard on duty and other suspects in connection with the robbery at the municipal traffic offices in Carletonville.

The Herald reported last week that armed robbers had targeted these offices on Saturday, 2 February. Instead of stealing money, however, they took documents that can be used in various transactions.
According to the communications officer of the police in Carletonville, WO Peter Masooa, members of the trio task team managed to track down six perpetrators in connection with the robbery during the past week.
The Fidelity security guard who was tied up during the robbery, and who initially reported the case, was the first to be arrested. He pointed out other people who had allegedly been involved. These suspects were arrested in Carletonville, Soweto, Lenasia and Ennerdale during the past week.
Most of the stolen documents, officially known as face value books, were also recovered.
The police opened possession of stolen property cases at the police stations in the areas where the suspects were arrested.
‘The team has been working very hard to get a breakthrough and hope to link the suspects to cases that happened at the municipality’, says the commander of the police’s trio task team, Lt-Col America Mashapa.
