Pensioners take initiative to clean up neighbourhood

Two pensioners from Eureka Park in Carletonville decided to clean the sidewalk in front of this old age facility themselves.

Although Eureka Park belongs to the Merafong City Local Municipality, the pavement in front of the facility, which house mostly pensioners, has recently been dirty and overgrown. That was until two of the residents, 58-year-old Ms Adri Denysschen and 67-year-old Ms Elize Faber, decided things could not continue as they are.
‘I was scared that snakes would come out from the bushes and that I might trip over stones. I had even been scratched by overgrown rose bushes and decided that something must be done,’ says Denysschen.
About a month ago, she and Faber started cutting the overgrown bushes and grass and cleaned the sidewalk in front of Eureka Park’s entrance in Uralite Street. They later started cleaning the next pavement around the corner in Onyx Drive, too.
The community-conscious women borrowed the equipment from other residents to do all the work but they do not have protective clothing.
Despite this, they plan to extend their cleaning towards the Shoprite area too.
They put all the plant waste into municipal dustbins to be taken away. ‘Some people think we are mad but, if you want things to get done, it is better to do it yourself than sit and complain,’ Denysschen told the Herald.
Anyone who wants to assist the women with black bags, equipment or protective clothing, can call Faber at 081 489 2904.
