Graveyard looking worse by the day

The state of the old graveyard in Fochville is getting worse by the day.

Even though the cemetery lies between the Fochville traffic department and the Fochville waste transfer station – both municipal facilities – Merafong seems to have forgotten all about it. The entrance gate was stolen several months ago and has still not been replaced, despite several complaints.
As a result, the cattle grazing in the nearby open spaces come in and pollute and damage the area.
They have already knocked over several tombstones.
The graveyard’s proximity to the waste transfer station also leaves it wide open to solid waste and litter every day.
It has been a long time since the municipality has cleaned it properly.
Several plastic bags were pushing through the palisade fence closest to the waste transfer station on Monday, while several others had blown into the trees inside the graveyard.
The Herald asked the municipality about the problems on Tuesday.
‘The municipality will repair the gate and attend to the gravestones.
It will also arrange for solid waste teams to clear all the rubbish,’ a municipal spokesperson said on Tuesday.
