The North West Hawks arrested two men in Potchefstroom last Sunday for being in possession of dagga valued at R140 000.
According to NW Hawks spokesperson, Capt Tlangelani Rikhotso, the two suspects; Mzawubonwa Dyubele (71) and Samuel Mothibedi (59) appeared before the Potchefstroom magistrates’ court on 24 October 2016 where they were each released on R1 000 bail. The case was postponed to 9 November 2016 for further investigation.
Rikhotso says the two were allegedly driving from Johannesburg in a white Corsa at the time of the arrest. Police stopped and searched the vehicle and found three large black bags full of dagga with a street value of R140 000 stashed in the boot of the Corsa.
Last Thursday, while the Hawks were in Potchefstroom conducting their ATM fraud and drugs campaign they received a tip-off and also managed to arrest a 21-year-old Nigerian for possession of dagga.
Rikhotso says these arrests come shortly after another successful dagga bust in the neighbouring town of Jouberton in Klerksdorp. The Hawks found dagga worth approximately R700 000 in two houses and both the alleged dealers were arrested.
Between April and September 2016, five suspects were arrested in Potchefstroom for possession of drugs, bringing the total number of drug-related arrests in the NW province to twelve.
‘The provincial head of the Hawks – Maj. Gen. Linda Mbana has warned that the Hawks are on a mission to clean up the province,’ she concluded.
