Leak at substation gets residents jittery

Residents are concerned that a huge
leak of sorts next to an electrical substation
could cause serious problems before
long.
Several residents contacted the Herald
this week, complaining about the
leak next to the municipal substation in
Reyneke Street in Carletonville.
According to them, it had been leaking
for some time, already but, as municipal
employees visit this municipal
infrastructure on a regular basis, they
took it for granted that someone would
have picked up the problem by now.
When the Herald visited the site during
the past week, however, it was clear
that something was amiss.
Standing in front of the substation in
Reyneke Street, one could see a large
green patch of grass to the right of the
facility that clearly indicated that the
water had been leaking here for some
time.
Upon closer inspection, there was a
large section of the ground just outside
the substation’s boundary fence that
was soggy and wet and other water leaks
were also visible inside the fence. Some
of the water seemed to be getting too
close for comfort to the electrical infrastructure
inside the substation.
“How is it that no one from the municipality
has picked up the problem yet?
What will happen if the water damages
something?” asked Ms Judy Rossouw,
the councillor from the area who had also
complained about the problem.
The Herald asked the municipality
about it on Tuesday and received a response
just before going to print.
According to a spokesperson, the
leak had been identified and the municipality
was busy with excavation to effect
repairs.

Water could also be seen inside the substation's fence.
