A local movie-maker has released a video featuring 10 actors from Ubizo MaFrika Theatre Organisation in Khutsong. Lucky Noholoza wrote and directed the movie, entitled “Temptation” that came out on 23 December last year and is currently available on video. The crew started working on the movie in 2014 and completed the project twelve months later. It is based on social issues such as rape and drugs and aims to send a clear message to adults in society not to abuse their children. “It becomes a generational cycle of trauma that leads to drug abuse and, ultimately, prison,” Noholoza explains. The group sold 200 copies in the first two weeks and has received positive response and feedback. The director would love to see the community believing in the storytellers of Merafong and coming to support them. The movie is based on the theatre production that they had been performing for a year, and which won them an “Against all Odds” provincial award. According to Lucky, many professional actors had encouraged them to shoot a film from the story as it was educational and could impact the lives of young people in the country. “We want to showcase the movie
at high schools and host stage plays at primary schools,” he said. The group is also planning to take the movie to the Mzanzi Magic TV channel. “We, as the youth of Khutsong, should tell our stories and let the world know about where we come from,” Lucky enthused. The group would also appreciate any form of sponsorship. For more information, contact Nkululeko Bassie at 084 734 6710 or Lucky at 073 829 5490.
