Riot over Councillors

Khutsong community members staged a protest at the magistrates court at the Khutsong police station on 25 January.

Khutsong community members staged a protest at the magistrates court at the Khutsong police station on 25 January. This followed a disruption of a meeting to elect new ward councillors, which was held in Batswaneng section on Sunday 24 January. Trouble started when the community members realised that some of the candidates were not on the database. There was an aggressive exchange between the unhappy crowd and the three candidates that had been elected. Another three candidates were arrested after one of the elected ones opened a case of intimidation, following an exchange of verbal insults. As far as could be determined, one of those arrested is a current municipal councillor. They appeared in court on 25 January and were released on bail while the community members marched to the station and protested. The case was postponed and they will appear in the Khutsong Magistrates Court again on Friday 29 January.
