VEREENIGING. – The executive director of Corporate Services in the SEdibeng District Municipality must vacate her post with immediate effect.

This was the chanted demand of SA Municipal Workers Union, Samwu. Union members downed tools as they chanted outside the main building of the Sedibeng District Municipality in the early hours of the morning on Monday. According to a well-placed source the executive director of Corporate Services, Mapula Phiri delayed a process enabling the municipality to buy new vehicles.

It is alleged that she – the director – wanted to give the tender to the supplier of her choice, who did not have the proper qualifications. She allegedly made the decision without following protocol, said the source. Zakes Nqayi, local union secretary, said Phiri has been given special leave pending further investigations. He said Municipal Manager Yunus Chamda has appealed to workers to return to work. Nqayi said the union will get proper feedback by Friday.

SDM Acting Director of Communications, Lebo Mofokeng said it was an internal dispute between the employees and a senior manager and added that matter is being dealt with by the municipal manager.
