Carletonville MMA fighter dominates in first-round victory
He will now be moving up the ranks.
Carletonville’s only professional MMA fighter walked over his opponent last week.
Mpumelelo Mngoma (30), affectionately known as ‘Zulu’ by his fellow team members at the Fight St MMA Club in Carletonville, took on Tyral James Louw, professional MMA fighter from Johannesburg on October 10.
The fact that Louw is also a well-known boxer did not help him against the Carletonville star.
Although they were supposed to fight in three rounds of five minutes each, Mngoma first pinned him in a move called a triangle, and from there in an arm bar. This caused Mngoma to win with a submission during the first minutes of the fight.
According to Mngoma’s coach, Shihan Chimmy van Winkel, the flyweight division in which Mngoma fights is the weight division with the most fighters. There are approximately 50 fighters from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Namibia, Botswana and Kenia battling for positions.
Mngoma’s win will see him move into the top 20 of this weight category.
“I am very proud of ‘Zulu. He really fought well,” says Van Winkel.
He says that if all goes according to plan, Mngoma will have another fight before the end of the year.
