Carletonville water leaks persist despite Rand Water restrictions

The water restrictions were implemented over the past weekend.

Although Rand Water has announced water restrictions due to its reserves running low this week, the Merafong City Local Municipality is still not attending to some ongoing water leaks in Carletonville.

By Monday afternoon water was still streaming from the sidewalk next to 45 Kaolin Street. So much water has leaked at the site that the grass on the sidewalk is bright green and much longer than the surrounding grass.

The ongoing leak has already damaged the road surface and there is a permanent puddle of water on the tar. The excess water streams into the nearest stormwater drain.

Meanwhile, just around the corner on Agnew Road, water is also still streaming from another leak near the four-way crossing with Kaolin Street.
Both leaks had already been reported to the municipality more than six months ago.

On October 13, the municipality, however, issued a notice that Rand Water had implemented stringent measures to conserve declining water reserves. As part of this, they asked that water leaks should be reported to them.

From this week, lawns, gardens and landscapes may only be watered between 21:00 to 04:00. Residents are also encouraged to limit washing their cars to once a week and to use a bucket instead of a hose pipe for this purpose.

The filling or refilling of swimming pools is prohibited and residents are also advised to keep outdoor swimming pools covered to reduce water loss due to evaporation. Where possible, residents must take showers instead of baths. They are also encouraged to use grey water, where possible, and recycle rainwater.

Their marketing and communications manager, Temba Fezani, did not answer questions about the ongoing water leaks by printing time.
