Water cuts: Merafong to speak to Rand Water

The municipality still owes them more than R1 billion.

The Merafong City Local Municipality says it will still talk to Rand Water about their threat to curb water due to non-payment by the municipality.

Rand Water placed notices in four languages in last week’s edition of the Herald, in which the bulk water utility warned that they will start to curb the water supply to this municipal area with 20%.

According to Rand Water Merafong owes them R1 011 020 113, of which the municipal council has only paid R28 000 000 over the past three months. This amount only accounts for 2.77% of their overdue debt.

Because of this Rand Water said it was going to reduce the bulk water supply to the municipality as of September 17.

Rand Water says they made the decision despite the complaints it received during the public participation process that started in May.

Meanwhile, Rand Water promised that the planned maintenance on the Lesotho Highlands Tunnel, will have little effect on customers in Merafong.

The maintenance is expected to take place from October 1 to March 31, 2025.

Spokesperson for the Merafong City Local Municipality responded to the Herald’s enquiries on Tuesday, saying: “The municipality will engage with Rand Water by the end of this week to find an amicable solution.”
