Community reaches out to special school

The hard-working community members with good hearts wish to change things for the better.

Various residents reached out to a special project to help undocumented children in Greenspark this week.

On Mandela Day, Karmenn Goosen from Fochville who is a semi-finalist in the Mrs Universe South Africa pageant, joined forces with several officials from the Department of Justice in Fochville to help the Khayalami house on Kingfisher Street.

This house, which belongs to Greenspark resident Glen Fourie, changed the configuration to help the community. More than 10 children who could not go to school because they did not have birth certificates are currently taught there. These children are not foreigners, but for some reason or another, their parents have neglected to get them legally registered. There is also a soup kitchen for needy children.

“Some of these children are the third generation of their families who do not have IDs. We want to break this vicious cycle,” says Goosen.

The officials have pledged to help with this process and also donated useful items, such as a carpet and various stationary to the learners.
All those who helped gave the youngsters a special meal at Mandela Laerskool Losberg in Fochville as well as a huge donation of old books, which are not being used at this school anymore.

A former teacher’s assistant at Greenspark Primary School, Tumelo Mpalweni who has been teaching the children with another concerned resident, Thandiwe Bontes, immediately started reading to the students from one of the books.

According to Goosen, Khayalami is still in need of various goods, including curtains and pelmets, a refrigerator, gas stove, gas, carpets and educational toys such as hula-hoops and skipping ropes.
