Still no progress with collapsed bridge

Drivers are endangering their own safety out of necessity.

The municipality has still not done anything to get a major access road into Wedela reopened.

The road past the Wedela graveyard has been severely damaged for more than two years. Although the road was already damaged earlier, the road over a bridge culvert close to the graveyard completely collapsed around March 2022 after it was damaged by heavy rain.

Many motorists however take chances to drive over a piece of corrugated iron that someone placed over a part of the damage. They also continually drive over the side of the heap of gravel placed near the entrance of the road. The gravel is placed there to block traffic from the road between the N12 and Blyvooruitzicht entering.

They take these chances because residents of areas such as Extension 3 in Wedela have to drive through the whole town to get to their houses, while this damaged road leads directly to the area.

Although the Municipal Manager, Mr Dumisani Mabuza, issued a notice that the road as well as the graveyard were officially closed so that the road could be fixed on 14 September last year, the municipality has done no work whatsoever at the damaged road over the bridge since this time.

The municipality’s Marketing and Communications Manager, Mr Temba Fezani, also did not answer questions about the matter sent to the municipality over the past two weeks.
