Sewage floods entrance to town

Problems such as these have happened in this area before.

During the past week large sewage leaks at the entrance to Welverdiend worried many of the town’s residents.

Welverdiend residents have had a bad time during the past weeks. Not only were they stuck without electricity from 2 to 13 June, the area’s sewerage infrastructure also does not seem adequate.

By the afternoon of Thursday, 13 June, a huge amount of sewage had dammed up to the right side of the entrance to the town on the way to the railway tracks. Sewage was streaming from an overflowing manhole next to the palisade fence.

Not only was the footpath used by pedestrians flooded, but the sewage even streamed through the palisades and started damming up next to the railway tracks. The leaking sewage does not only cause unhealthy living conditions but can also eventually lead to the forming of sinkholes.

“It is very smelly and makes it difficult for us to walk here,” lamented a resident from the area, Mr Thapelo Metseeme, who struggled to find his way past the marsh caused by the leaks.

Other residents complained over the problem on social media and noted that they just did not have the money to pay private plumbers to sort the issues out themselves.

“Blockages are recurring and they are attended as and when required. It will be investigated and be addressed,” the municipality answered when asked about the matter.

The overflowing manhole flooded a large area.
The sewage even dammed up next to the railway line.
