Litter louts mess up veld

These people are polluting our enironment.

People who carelessly throw rubbish and building rubble next to Fochville are upsetting law-abiding residents. One of these residents, Mr Johan Knell, was furious after these sloths continued to throw rubbish on the side of Hawer Street this week.

The litterbugs throw rubbish on the pavement and next to the fence of Piet Viljoen Park, but drive deeper into the veld to dump building rubble and garden refuse.

When the Herald visited the site on Thursday, 6 June, several people in a blue Isuzu bakkie with the registration number HMH534GP were dumping rubbish and building rubble in the veld near the golf driving range, before driving off again once the vehicle was empty.

According to another upset resident, Mr Corne van der Merwe, some people continue to dump their rubbish on open stands and spaces. This has caused other residents to start taking drastic steps, such as searching the rubbish for addresses and then throwing the dumped rubbish back into the offenders’ yards.

“A video camera is going to catch people who think it’s a dumping area. Your face, dustbin number, and/or your vehicle will be live-shared on social media when you dump your rubbish,” Knell also warned.

The Herald asked the Merafong City Local Municipality about the matter on Monday.

“The owner of the vehicle will be investigated and necessary steps will be taken accordingly. The municipality is committed to address all the iilegal dumping challenges. The council has resolved to establish a dedicated law enforcement unit to address all the by-laws related issues across Merafong,” their spokesperson responded.
