Concern about no water meters

"Average consumption is used in the absence of a meter."

Khutsong residents are concerned that many houses are without water meters.

On Monday, a pensioner from Khutsong Extension 4, Mr Ben Molefe, complained that someone had stolen the water meter in front of his house, No. 517, in December last year.

“I reported it to the municipality, but they never came to replace it.
Now, I do not know whether the money they charge me for water is correct, as they are guessing how much I use,” says Molefe.

“I think maybe 20 to 25 per cent of houses do not have water meters.
“That is one of the reasons why residents refuse to pay for water,” says a plumber, Mr Fanie Mannapula.

Several residents of towns like Carletonville complain that the municipality has taken its time to replace water meters in the past. In many cases, people, presumably metal thieves, had stolen the meters.

The Herald took the issue to the municipality on Tuesday.

“Average consumption is used in the absence of a meter. An analysis of houses without meters is underway so they can be replaced. Meter leakage and replacement is a continuous process that is done as and when required,” said the municipal spokesperson, Mr Temba Fezani.
