Fatal accidents and shooting over Easter

Seven accidents occurred, three of which were fatal.

The Easter long weekend was a busy one for law enforcers.

According to the Merafong City Local Municipality’s marketing and communications manager, Mr Temba Fezani, numerous accidents occurred in our area from Thursday, 28 March to Monday, 1 April.

Seven accidents occurred, three of which were fatal. The people involved in the other four accidents had injuries ranging from serious to slight.

The first fatal crash happened on the N12 at about 10:00 on Thursday. One patient died in the accident.

Another patient died in a crash on the bridge at Khutsong Extension 5 on Saturday night.

A third accident happened under the bridge at around 08:00 on Sunday. In this instance, a police officer died when his van collided with another vehicle. As far as could be determined, the deceased was not from a local police station.

Municipal and provincial traffic officers and the SAPS held numerous roadblocks in the area over the weekend. According to provincial roads authorities, 57 people died on Gauteng’s roads over the long weekend.
Meanwhile, a gang of robbers who tried to rob a shop in the Carletonville CBD ran into trouble at the start of the Easter weekend.

The owner of a muti-shop on Flint Street was serving customers on Thursday, 28 March. Two unknown men walked in at approximately 20:20. They pulled out firearms and instructed everyone to get down.

“We want money,” the thugs demanded. One customer (30) refused, however, and a scuffle ensued.

During the fight, one robber fired two shots, allowing the customer to pull out his firearm. He then fired several shots in the direction of the two robbers and started chasing after them. The robbers split up, and one jumped into a Fiat Uno and raced off.

The police found one of his accomplices (29) on Gold Street, where he had succumbed to his injuries after sustaining a gunshot to his upper body.

They found the second suspect (31) at flats on Garnet Street. He had been shot in his abdomen and was admitted to Carletonville Hospital.

The third suspect managed to flee in the Uno. The police are investigating cases of attempted business robbery and inquest.
