Resident found and kidnappers arrested

A resident who wanted to buy a house was kidnapped and held in Johannesburg for days.

Detectives from Carletonville made a big arrest this week.

A Carletonville man told his wife he wanted to go and negotiate the asking price of a house on Annan Road near the 007 shopping complex on the evening of 6 February.

His wife dropped him off at the house, but when he did not return home by the following day, she opened a missing person case with the Carletonville police. The investigating officer, Sgt Leticia Buthelezi, started searching for him.

Although no one asked the family for a ransom, Buthelezi received information that kidnappers in Johannesburg were holding a man from Carletonville. Buthelezi and her colleagues searched for the kidnapped resident, found him and his seven kidnappers, and arrested the latter on the spot.

They had reportedly withdrawn large amounts of money from his bank account while holding him captive.

The money, amounting to over R40,000, was also recovered. The police are investigating cases of kidnapping and theft.
