Bridge a huge danger

Overgrown sidewalks forces pedestrians on the road.

A bridge in a busy street in Carletonville poses a real danger to pedestrians and motorists alike.

The sidewalks on both sides of the bridge on Reinecke Street between Coronation Street and Dolomite Drive are severely overgrown. The big bushes make it impossible for pedestrians to walk there and force them onto the tar road. The bushes are so dense in places that the pedestrians cannot even walk near the side of the road.

As the road is relatively narrow, a driver would have to slam on the brakes if a pedestrian is on the bridge at the same time as oncoming traffic. The situation has been problematic for years. The Merafong City Local Municipality only cuts the bushes on the sides of the bridge once every summer, if at all.

The bridge is even more dangerous for the many schoolchildren who have to walk over it to get to and from school.
The municipality did not respond to our questions on Tuesday.
