Sewage streaming into river at Fochville

The Merafong City Local Municipality continues to pollute the environment in the Fochville area.

During the past week, a resident of Populier Street, Mrs Rina Eleveld, complained about an ongoing sewage leak in the veld opposite their home.

“The stench is so strong, it almost smells like pool acid. It burns your nose when you breathe. We have reported the problem, but no one has done anything,” Eleveld complains.

The sewage streams from a broken maintenance hole in the veld at the Kraalkopspruit and flows directly into the river. The Kraalkopspruit joins the Loopspruit at the Piet Viljoen Park. The Loopspruit then flows past Kokosi and farms in the area to the Klipdrift Dam near Potchefstroom.

Although it is difficult to get to the river in this area because the municipality does not cut the grass, and the banks are overgrown, a look downstream shows a lot of sewage recently leaked into it.

At Dawid Nel Park, the water is dark and murky, even though there are no visible leaks in this area.

The Herald took the issue to the municipality on Tuesday.

“The municipality is unaware of this leak but will investigate and resolve the issue. The municipality again urges residents to report all service delivery complaints to the municipal call centre at (018) 788 9990 or via WhatsApp at 082 516 0794,” said the acting municipal communications and marketing manager, Ms Nomonde Mahube.
