Sewage dumping in other areas too

Drivers of honey-sucker trucks contracted by the Merafong City Local Municipality disrespect our area's environment.

The Herald reported last week that a resident of Carletonville was furious when he photographed the driver of a honey-sucker truck and his assistant dumping sewage on the side of Station Street on 5 October. Although the sewage should have been dumped into a maintenance hole on the side of the road, most of the waste landed on the ground. According to residents of Khutsong, these truck drivers also cause headaches there.

An opposition party councillor, Mr Welile Fihla, shared a video and photos with the Herald of how one of these trucks with the registration number DV18LSGP dumped sewage into the storm water canal between the Xhosa Section taxi rank and Mbulelo Primary School recently.

“They often dump sewage into this canal, and many people complain about it, but the municipality does nothing,” Fihla lamented. Meanwhile, the same happens at a sinkhole near Maselwane’s Place in Batswaneng.
Fihla and another resident, Mr Wellington Letswamotse, showed where sewage was being pumped into the sinkhole. By Monday, some of the black waste was still visible at the bottom.

“The municipality must do something about this; it cannot just continue,” Letswamotse complains.

The Herald took the issue to the municipality on Tuesday.

“The issue in question was addressed and resolved. All drivers are aware of where to dump sewage and have been warned about implications of illegal dumping of sewage. The community should report any unlawful dumping of sewage to the municipal call centre at (018) 788 9990 or via WhatsApp at 082 516 0794,” says the acting municipal marketing and communications manager, Ms Nomonde Mahube.

The municipality denied that it was dumping sewage into sinkholes. They said they were pumping sewage out of the sinkholes instead.
