Sewer nightmare in Dolomite

Motorists driving on Dolomite Drive in Carletonville have no way of knowing whether the streams on the side of the road are water or sewage leaks.

In the past week, a long-time resident, Mr John Templeton, complained about a massive sewage leak on the side of Dolomite.
“I have complained about this for ages, but nobody has bothered to investigate. I first reported it to the municipality about a year ago, but they have done nothing,” Templeton lamented.
The Herald went to investigate the problem, the extent of which is not noticeable when driving past on Dolomite Drive.
Large quantities of sewage streamed from a maintenance hole in the open area between Talc Street and Moraea Street. So much sewage had leaked on this site that it had flooded a large part of the veld. The sewage flowed over the sidewalk and downhill on Dolomite Drive.
Templeton says he is particularly concerned about the problem as there have previously been sinkholes in the same area.
On Tuesday, the Herald asked the Merafong City Local Municipality when it would address the
situation.
Residents in this area have also complained that sewage leaks often occur here.
Some of the leaks closer to Talc Street have been so bad that residents have previously dug trenches to keep the sewage from damming up.
Although the Herald asked the municipality what caused the severe sewer leaks in this area, they had no answer.
“All sewer blockages are recurring activities. If it gets blocked again, the relevant department will investigate and unblock it.
Once again, the municipality urges the community to direct all service delivery complaints and enquiries to the call centre, where they will be attended to,” the municipality’s acting marketing and communications manager, Ms Nomonde Mahube, answered.
