Sidewalk a growing problem

A sidewalk in a busy street in Fochville is becoming an eyesore and safety risk.

Residents recently complained to the Herald that the sidewalk, near the Losberg Avenue circle, is almost a constant mess because homeless people, some alleged drug users, have chosen this spot as their sleeping place.
Although the problem has existed for years, it seems to be worsening.
The concrete wall next to the sidewalk is blackened from fires on the sidewalk and is covered with graffiti. The sidewalk is littered with rubbish and broken bottles.
“This looks terrible and is also next to the church,” a resident complains. Business owners in the area have also complained about the problems in the past.
The Herald took the matter to the Merafong City Local Municipality and received a response on Tuesday.
“The waste management section will clean the sidewalk. Homeless people are a social problem. The municipality cannot arrest someone for being homeless or impose fines as it would have no effect. Merafong conducted enforcement this week by removing blankets on the sidewalks. The fire department assisted with the fire next to the Caltex Garage reported today, 15 August. We will contact the social development section for advice on the situation and the possibility of assisting homeless people with shelter,” says the municipal spokesperson, Mrs Nomonde Mahube.
