Double murders shock

Two double murders in the past week showed again that the Carletonville area is becoming increasingly dangerous.

The first incident happened on Monday, 24 July.
Three men parked their SUV near the Elijah Barayi mega housing complex sports grounds at approximately 19:15. Suddenly, a man walked towards them and started shooting at their car with a 9 mm pistol. Two men died at the scene, while an ambulance rushed the third to Carletonville Hospital.
Yet another double murder happened two days later, on Wednesday, 26 July.
A taxi owner and his driver, who also helped with mechanical work, were fixing a minibus taxi at the owner’s house in the 60s of Khutsong Extension 5 at about 19:30.
Suddenly, an unknown man approached them and started firing at the men with an R5 assault rifle. Both men died in the ambush.
The taxi owner was the Secretary of the Carletonville United Taxi Association (Cuta), Mr Oupa Mhlongo. He was 45 years old. The deceased driver, Mr Dumisa Jwili, was 38.
The police’s specialised taxi violence unit is investigating the case.
Another shooting related to taxi violence happened in Carletonville on the night of Tuesday, 25 July.
The driver of a taxi belonging to another Cuta member was driving on Annan Road at approximately 22:45. He suddenly noticed a Volkswagen Polo and a bakkie behind him at the crossing with Reinecke Street.
The next moment, the men in the two vehicles started shooting at the taxi. They hit the driver (43) in the left side of his chest and an ambulance transported him to Carletonville Hospital.
The police are investigating an attempted murder case following the incident.
