Watch out for hijackers

Motorists should be ultra-vigilant as hijackers struck in numerous places in our area again this week.

A truck driver had an experience he would rather forget on Thursday, 6 April.
He was driving from Lichtenburg and passed through Welverdiend when the incident happened at 18:25.
Driving on 17th Avenue, he suddenly saw a marked police car in front of him.
One of the officers inside gestured for him to stop.
“Do not switch off your truck and walk with me to my car,” the officer told the driver.
As they approached the car, a Ford Focus with police branding and a Mercedes-Benz raced toward them and parked in front of the truck. A man jumped out of the Mercedes, ran to the vehicle, jumped in and took off.
The police officer and passengers in the Mercedes grabbed the truck driver and pushed him into the car. They took off with him and dropped him off at a Sandton offramp in Pretoria.
The most unusual hijacking this week happened in a parking lot during daylight in Carletonville.
Two men were sitting in their silver VW Polo Max in the parking lot of the Bluebell shopping complex at approximately 11:00 on Wednesday, 12 April.
Suddenly, two unknown thugs walked up to the car, pulled out firearms and pointed them at the occupants.
Both men jumped out and tried to run away. Unfortunately, the thugs caught up with one of them, forced him back into the car and drove off with him.
The criminals later called the victim’s family and asked them to pay a ransom. Luckily, they later released him.
The police are investigating carjacking, kidnapping and extortion charges.
Even a security officer was hijacked in our area this week.
The officer was driving a Toyota Quantum belonging to his employer G4S when the incident happened on Wednesday, 12 April.
The security officer turned off from the N12 onto the P111 on his way to Carletonville. At approximately 09:40, he reportedly noticed spikes in the road at the turn-off to Randfontein.
He could not swerve out as there was a truck to his right. His vehicle had almost stood still when two unknown men yanked the door open and jumped in.
They drove off with him and dropped him near South Deep Mine.
According to the tracking system, the Quantum’s last location was near Poortjie.
