Nayaboswa Primary School celebrates National Library Week

National Library Week is currently under way in South Africa and this year's theme is "Telling powerful stories."

The week ends on 26 March and the theme provides insight into the role of libraries in South African society.
According to Nkosana Nyamande of Nayaboswa Primary School in Khutsong, this school celebrated the theme of this year’s library week held over four days. The purpose was to promote and educate the learners about the importance of reading and the role their local library plays.
The first day, the school staff paid a visit to all foundation phase classrooms to rejuvenate and add more books to the learner’s library corners in each class. The posters around the school premises also began to create reading awareness and also to remind the learners that we are celebrating library week.
On the second day, the school’s library officially opened to the intermediate phase learners, where they were shown the library and how it operates. A tour of the library office followed, and the children had a chance to ask questions. Topics such as the importance of visiting the library, knowing your way around the library, the junior section and taking care of books and library membership were covered.
On Wednesday the school held an “All Tools Down” for 30 minutes where all learners, educators and general staff members assembled to read silently for 30 minutes in honor of library week. The final day concluded library week with the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture from Merafong City Local Municipality bringing membership cards to open free memberships for all the school’s learners and to educate them on library services. The activities ended with a reading competition, orientation and storytelling. In the spirit of National Library Week, municipality is also pardoning library users who have racked up fines by not returning books. This amnesty period will last until 26 March.
