Junior excels again

A member of the Cornerstone Athletics Club in Carletonville excelled at the provincial school athletics championship last weekend.

Junior Smith, a learner of Westfields Primary School, qualified for the finals in the u.12 150 m race during the championship at Ruimsig Stadium in Roodepoort.
“The road to the provincials came with great excitement for us, with a lot of anticipation for great results from Junior. Unfortunately, he did not make it to the podium for the 150 m race after strong boys showed greater strength this time,” says his coach, Afika Ndlazi.
However, Junior was part of the u.12 boys relay team on the second day.
“He ran the back straight and had to fight hard to catch up from the second place,” says Ndlazi.
Ultimately, Junior’s team walked off as winners and brought gold medals home. Unfortunately, he was not chosen for the relay team for the nationals.
“It is good to win, but also good to lose because you must work harder and come back stronger,” says Ndlazi.
Junior trained on the Westcol soccer grounds as no other facility was available.
