Give Hope a new home

The Carletonville SPCA is looking for a new home for a special little dog who, despite having enough reason not to trust humans, is still extremely friendly and loving.

According to SPCA inspector Ms Carla Sutherland, a concerned community member brought a beautiful four-month-old Jack Russel terrier to their office on Valentine’s Day. She had picked up the little dog in Olivine Street in Carletonville after she saw it suffering on a sidewalk. Someone, presumably the previous owners, had tied a part of her tail with an elastic band to dock it. Docking is a practice formerly used to shorten the tails of certain dog breeds, but it has been illegal for several years.
“Cutting a dog’s tail is like cutting their vertebrae,” says Sutherland.
Besides the intense pain the puppy had to go through as part of the illegal procedure, her tail was infected, and she had to receive urgent medical attention.
With the help of concerned members of the public, the SPCA paid a private veterinarian to cut off the infected part of the tail.
The SPCA named the puppy Hope because she is “a little fighter” and remained friendly and cheerful to humans despite the ordeal. As the wound on her tail has healed, Hope is finally ready for adoption by a special person or family who will give her lots of love.
Anyone wanting to adopt Hope can contact the Carletonville SPCA at 018 788 6262.

Little Hope’s tail was so infected that the SPCA had to get urgent help from a private veterinarian.
