Big arrest in the Carletonville CBD

The part of Palladium Street in front of the Carletonville Wimpy was cordoned off after a significant police bust last week.

The street was closed following the arrest of a 36-year-old male employee of Sibanye-Stillwater on 15 February. His arrest was part of a sting operation organised by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), commonly known as the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, the Carletonville Detectives, the SAPS Highway Patrol and the West Rand Explosives Unit. The operation started at approximately 13:00.
According to the SAPS West Rand District Commissioner, General Fred Kekana, the man was taken down after an intensive investigation into the selling and distributing of explosives to cash-in-transit robbers over the past months.
The suspect was in possession of explosives, fuses and detonators. The police also found R30,000 in the cubbyhole of his white VW City Golf.
They then went to his house in Carletonville Extension 9, where they found several fuses hidden in clothing drawers.
Meanwhile, a 38-year-old female mine employee was also arrested at East Driefontein in possession of seven kilogrammes of amalgamated gold worth R14 million at approximately 23:30 the night before. She appeared in the Oberholzer Magistrate’s Court the following day.
This suspect was denied bail and appeared in court again on
Tuesday.
Kekana expressed his satisfaction with the police’s work.
“We are dealing with the criminals,” he said.
The arrest was made with the help of Sibanye-Stillwater’s security.
